Sandone Tire

The Sandone Family has owned and operated a successful wholesale and retail tire business from Scranton, Pennsylvania for over 55 years. Over the past several years, the family has considered opening a second retail facility in Scranton which would completely transform the typical customer experience.

The project gained momentum when the family purchased a 1.5 acre parcel located on Main Street in Taylor, Pa. Thus concept design began in February 2006. Design direction was based on the Owner’s initiative to provide a unique setting to his customer. Pat Sandone, III understood that buying tires was a necessary but not very exciting purchase for most consumers. Drawing on his experiences while working in Europe, he challenged the architect to design a new type of store and retail experience. This vision revolved around the structure providing a simple, economical, yet unique design which would embody their new corporate identity to future locations.

The project site restricted the facility to a linear arrangement with minimal frontage along Main Street. Therefore the project organization was simplified to allow the showroom to be the foremost image of the new facility. This would also allow the service bays to extend toward the rear of the parcel; minimizing the exposure of utilitarian space to the customer arrival. Careful site planning evolved conditions, initially seen as limitations, into features that showcase the retail environment.

With the functional organization established, the Owner initiatives were explored in order to study the facility three dimensionally. This focus centered around a simple, functional, yet flexible showroom and customer care center. Functionally, the plan was organized into several areas for each of the various functions: customer consultation, product display, and customer care. Although the functions sound similar to a typical tire purchasing experience, customer consultation and care include amenities that transform the mundane into a customer focused experience.
